A Brief History Of Dog Walking and NYC POOCH
New York City is one of the dog-friendliest cities in the world and the place where dog walking got its start. Busy New Yorkers have long relied upon their friendly neighborhood dog walker, and we’re proud to be a part of this history since 2002. We tip our hats (and our leashes) to the great walkers who paved the way, and salute our fellow hard-working dog walkers who put 100% of their hearts into caring for other people’s dogs each and every day.
Let’s go on a walk back through time, shall we?
It’s New York City in the Roaring 20’s. Coney Island is serving up hot dogs for 5 cents, the Brooklyn Dodgers are actually playing in Brooklyn, and dogs are running around the streets of Manhattan with far less oversight than they are by today’s standards.
Fast forward to 1962. The city is changing and so are the needs of busy New Yorkers. Enter Jim Buck, widely recognized as the first NYC dog walker. Mr. Buck is one impressive dude, often seen shepherding 15+ dogs through the streets of New York, making pack walks the norm. And let's face it, he looks great doing it! Today, we tip our hats to this legend who took his passion for dogs and found a way to live that love every day. He changed the way dogs got walked in our town, and many other dog lovers followed in his foot steps.
In 2002, lifelong friends Dan and Shane set out to offer a more individualized service. Their vision: Treat each dog with the same care and attention they get from their owners. Armed with nothing but a couple of leashes and cool sneakers, the guys create NYC POOCH and get to work. They don't pack walk. They ask the important questions. They take the time to learn each and every dog’s personality. They coin the phrase: “Every dog has their own version of the perfect walk.” Dogs are happier and New Yorkers take notice. NYC Pooch grows with support from their community, the team they build, and the work they put into finding and properly training their dog walkers.
In 2010, NYC Pooch partners with PUPTOIPIA and brings on Kristen Studio, CPDT-KA, CBCC-KA--certified dog trainer and behavior consultant--to take our love and passion for dogs to the next level. Together, we over-haul our entire training program for new walkers, focusing on health, wellness, breed specific traits, and safety. Positive reinforcement training techniques are at the core of all our services. We speak Dog!
We got all the fancy bells and whistles to help our clients stay connected. But we aren’t just some Silicon Valley startup that sends strangers to walk your dog, We’re local, passionate, dog-loving people with very high standards. We use technology as a tool to enhance our services, but technology alone is not enough. We maintain a bottom line of personalized service at an affordable price. While some other “mega” dog-walking companies model their approach after rideshare services, our focus is on our clients and our team. Dog-walking is not just “a job”; it’s a labor of love. It’s a promise to a canine heart that we will be there for them. Always. That they (and you) can trust us with their lives, and we will enhance them beyond the walk. Our technology helps you manage all aspects of your service, while providing you with full transparency, ease of use, and peace of mind.
Today, NYC Pooch is one of the most respected names in serious dog care. We’ve stayed true to our values. We have never tried to be the biggest or flashiest; we just work our tails off to be the best. We stay committed to enhancing dog-friendly communities, helping our team grow professionally, and positively impacting your dog’s life in any way we can. Finding and training the best people to take care of dogs is what we do best. Finding and serving the best clients is what we do second best. This translates to the very best care for your very best pal.
